On 3/19/2025 at 0749 hrs. at Blue Ridge Meats (est. 6648), IIC observed the following Humane Handling noncompliance: The establishment’s first animal of the day was a bull. When the establishment employee used the captive bolt, the first attempt did not stun the animal. The employee then immediately moved to the back-up 25 caliber (260 grain) captive bolt device and attempted a second stun. This also failed to render the animal unconscious. Immediately, a third stun with the captive bolt was administered. The third stun effectively rendered the animal unconscious. There was no vocalization by the animal at any time. Animal was successfully rendered unconscious at 0750 hrs. This is in noncompliance with 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1). IIC halted slaughter and tagged the knock box with US Rejected # B37851661. Upon discussion with SPHV, the tag was removed from the knock box and slaughter was allowed to resume. Slaughter floor manager and Plant manager were notified of the noncompliance.
