At approximately 5:00 pm while I was observing humane handling, I observed the following noncompliance, the first shot by a captive bolt did not effectively render the hog unconscious. The pig dropped and got up again looking disorientated and conscious; immediately another shot was fire leaving the hog unconscious. On the postmortem inspection two distinct points of the entry were observed in the skull of the hog. I notified REDACTED of the noncompliance with regulatory regulation.

At approximately 1750 hours on the slaughter floor, while performing Livestock Humane Handling Verification under HATS Category VIII, SPHV REDACTED and CSI REDACTED observed the following stunning noncompliance. The establishment employee stunning took two stunning attempts, using a captive bolt gun, to render a hog unconscious. The first stun appeared to enter around center mass but 1.5 inches to high leaving the hog still conscious and moving. The hog vocalized after the initial attempt of stunning. The establishment employee took immediate action by following up with a quick stun rendering the animal unconscious. Regulatory control action was taken stopping slaughter production. On Postmortem inspection, the head with skin on was observed and digitally palpated. The SPHV and CSI noted that there were two distinct points of contact on the head of the hog. The initial stun entered in the top of the head area of the hog. The second point of contact was correctly placed on the hog. On 10/21/2024 at approximately 1745 hours on the slaughter floor. while performing HATS category. I CSI REDACTED and SPHV REDACTED observed a stunning noncompliance at establishment M11111. Taking two stunning attempts to render a hog unconscious. The first stun appeared to enter around center mass but 1.5 inches to high, leaving the hog still conscious and moving. Hog was vocalizing at that moment. Employee REDACTED immediate action by following up with a quick stun rendering the animal unconscious. Regulatory control action was taken stopping slaughter production. On Postmortem inspection the head was observed and the SPHV and CSI noted that there were two distinct points of contact on the head of the hog. The initial stun entered in the top of the head area of the hog. The second point of contact was correctly placed on the hog. Slaughter personnel REDACTED Processing personnel REDACTED and Owner REDACTED was notified of the non-compliance. Slaughter process was restored with authorization from supervisor.
