313.16(a)(1)
On 6/2/25 at approximately 8:05 AM, the following non-compliance was observed during the humane euthanasia of an adult female goat that was condemned on antemortem inspection by the SPHV: The establishment employee elected to shoot the animal with a small caliber firearm as the method of humane euthanasia. After the initial shot, the SPHV determined that the shot had not resulted in stunning nor killing of the animal. The animal still had a corneal reflex and rhythmic breathing. The establishment employee was notified of this finding. The employee then went to retrieve the firearm again since he had put it back in its secure location. The employee then repeated a shot to the head of the animal. The SPHV confirmed that the second shot did appropriately stun and kill the animal since there was absence of rhythmic breathing and corneal reflex. The plant owner, Mr. REDACTED, was notified of the non-compliance with 9 CFR 313.16(a)(1) at 12:40 PM.
