Non-Compliance Description:

HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness On 09/19/2025 at approximately 1140 hours while performing the Livestock Humane Handling verification task on the kill floor of Harris Country Meats, I, CSI REDACTED observed the following non-compliance. A slaughter floor employee moved a hog into the knock box. The slaughter floor stun operator then loaded a .410 shotgun with 6 shot ammo at which point I exited the room. I heard the initial stun attempt with the .410 shotgun (6 shot ammo). I entered the room and observed the stun attempt had contacted the animal but was ineffective as the animal was exhibiting tracking eye movements, was still standing and moving backward and forward in the knock box. The stun operator recognized the failure and delivered immediate and effective corrective actions with the same .410 shotgun and ammo, rendering the animal insensible, and it remained so thereafter. I immediately tagged the knock box with US RETAIN/REJECT tag #B41458357 and notified REDACTED, establishment Supervisor, of the non-compliance and of the regulatory control action.
