HATS Category IX: Returning to Consciousness At approximately 0801 hours on 07/23/25 while observing effective stunning of hogs, I the CSI observed the following noncompliance. I observed a large hog that was stunned effectively with electrical current (Voltage for 300-440lbs) but then returned to consciousness. I observed the swine vocalizing, blinking eyes, and exhibiting a righting reflex. While the swine was vocalizing and conscious, the sticking employee stuck the swine for bleeding, then the stun operator immediately rendered the animal unconscious with a backup handheld captive bolt (.25 caliber) device. IPP and plant employees verified that the swine was unconscious. USDA Reject tag #A7627327 was applied to the stun box. The Production Manager and both stunners were verbally notified of the event. The Denver District Management Team was notified through supervisory channels. There have been no noncompliance records issued for the same root cause in the past 90 days. This establishment has implemented a robust systemic approach to the human handling of livestock.
