Musa Halal Slaughter House, LLC: Non-Compliance to Humane Livestock Handling in 2025 (USDA)

On 5/8/2025 at approximately 11:37am while conducting a humane handling inspection task and verifying the HATS categories, the SPHV, CSI and FI observed a humane handling noncompliance. Cow #3 was in the chute with the head restrained as such that the cow’s head was lifted to provide access to the neck. A plant employee went ahead and made the halal ritual cut on the cow. After a few minutes, the cow went down on its hind end but approximately 6 minutes after the cut was made, the cow still had a palpebral reflex, verified by the kill floor supervisor. At this moment, the kill floor supervisor slightly released the head catch. Right after this, another plant employee opened the chute at which time the cow stood back up with her hind limbs. Plant employees did not take corrective actions towards this until they were told by SPHV to do so. At this moment, the plant employee made a second halal ritual cut and a few seconds later, the cow went fully unconscious. Retain tag #B40847115 was placed in the kill chute approximately at 12:05pm. Plant supervisors and owner were notified of the noncompliance.
