On 11/13/2024 at approximately 5:00am while verifying HATS category IV: Handling During Ante-mortem Wayne Mays Meats TA-21848, the following non-compliance was observed: A heifer was injured in the lane leading into the knock box. The animal’s hind leg was lodged in an opening under the railing in the lane, causing an injured leg. Though injured, the animal was able to walk into the knock box for stunning. Regulatory Control was taken on the lane leading into the knock box with USDA Rejected tag B35852756 REDACTED, Supervisor and REDACTED, Plant Manager were notified of the noncompliance and the failure to comply with 9 CFR 313.1(a)

On 11/12/2024 at approximately 11:30am while verifying HATS category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness at Wayne Mays Meats TA-21848, the following non-compliance was observed: During slaughter, a bull was loaded into the knock box and restrained. The captive bolt stunner was applied and was ineffective at rendering the animal unconscious, as evidenced by the animal standing and vocalizing post-stun. Immediately afterward, a second stun was applied and rendered the animal unconscious and insensible to pain for the duration of the shackling, sticking and bleeding process. Regulatory Control was taken on the captive bolt stunning device with USDA Rejected tag B30780804 REDACTED Supervisor was notified of the noncompliance and the failure to comply with 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1) and 313.15(a)(3)
