In 1961, Burkina Faso had the highest annual inflation rate (18.56%) as measured by the consumer prices index, followed by Ivory Coast (11.62%), and then Sudan (8.76%). Egypt had the lowest annual inflation rate (0.69%) in Africa in 1961.
The World Bank defines inflation measured by the consumer price index as "the annual percentage change in the cost to the average consumer of acquiring a basket of goods and services that may be fixed or changed at specified intervals, such as yearly".
