According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in September 2002, the United States not seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U): Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH was 199.1 and the 12-month percent change (inflation rate) was 8.0%. The following item categories had the highest not seasonally adjusted 12-month percent change in CPI-U:

  1. Owners' equivalent rent of residences: 9.1%
  2. Rent of primary residence: 7.4%
  3. Food away from home: 5.7%
