According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in January 2003, the United States not seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U): Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH was 199.8 and the 12-month percent change (inflation rate) was 5.7%. The following item categories had the highest not seasonally adjusted 12-month percent change in CPI-U:

  1. Motor fuel: 32%
  2. Alcoholic beverages: 9%
  3. Owners' equivalent rent of residences: 8%
