According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in May 2003, the United States not seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U): Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH was 202.3 and the 12-month percent change (inflation rate) was 6.0%. The following item categories had the highest not seasonally adjusted 12-month percent change in CPI-U:

  1. Household energy: 19%
  2. Motor fuel: 9.1%
  3. Alcoholic beverages: 8.1%
