According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in July 2005, the United States not seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U): Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH was 217.2 and the 12-month percent change (inflation rate) was 7.0%. The following item categories had the highest not seasonally adjusted 12-month percent change in CPI-U:

  1. Motor fuel: 18%
  2. Household energy: 17.2%
  3. Alcoholic beverages: 4.4%

The CPI-U is based on the expenditures of almost all residents of urban or metropolitan areas, including professionals, the self-employed, the poor, the unemployed, and retired people, as well as urban wage earners and clerical workers.
