According to the US Census Bureau estimates, 1,691,415 (19.87%) of the 8,510,920 Virginia population in 2018 identified as Black or African American alone.

Fairfax County had the highest number of African Americans (121,874), and African Americans constituted 10.6% of the county's population. Other counties with high number of African Americans include: Richmond city (110,084) - 47.94% of the county's population, and Prince William County (103,435) - 22.17% of the county's population.
