On Friday September 16th, 2022 at approximately 0915 hours at Georgia Rural Hospital Food Collaborative Establishment # M1052, IPP observed a humane handling non-compliance during routine slaughter of swine. Electricity is used to render pigs unconscious at this establishment. The employee responsible for stunning attempted to render 1 pig unconscious with the 2-pronged electric wand. The first electric stun applied to the pig was improperly placed (failed to make sufficient contact with pig) and ineffective and the pig vocalized. The employee immediately repositioned the electric wand and applied the electric voltage a second time. This stun was improperly placed (failed to make sufficient contact with pig) and ineffective and the pig vocalized. The employee immediately repositioned the electric wand and applied electric voltage to the base of the ears and then to its thoracic cavity and successfully rendered it unconscious. This non-compliance violates regulation 313.30 (a) (3), 313.30 (b) (3). Because plant management took immediate corrective actions, no reject tag was placed on the stunning area and slaughter resumed. Plant management was notified of this non-compliance both verbally and in writing.
