Non-Compliance Description:

On April 15, 2025, at approximately 1:40 PM, while verifying humane handling of livestock, Inspection Program Personnel (IPP) observed the following humane handling incident: A ram was brought into the knock box. The employee used a rifle to knock the ram, however, the ram was not rendered unconscious, had purposeful eye movement, and started to bleed from the nose. The employee sliced the throat of the ram while conscious and the ram was observed standing with a sliced throat. The employee delivered a second shot to the ram’s head with the same rifle, but the second shot also failed to render the ram unconscious. The employee administered a third shot to the ram’s head which successfully rendered the animal unconscious. Plant management was notified verbally and in writing of this non-compliance with 9 CFR 313.16(a)(1) and 9 CFR 313.16(a)(3). On postmortem examination it was confirmed that there were three points of entry into the ram’s head. The plant does have a written robust systematic approach to humane handling. Regulatory controlaction was taken, by placing US Reject tag B39288784 on the knock box.
