At approximately 0940 hours on 05/23/2023, I, SPHV REDACTED, was notified by CSI REDACTED of the following noncompliance: At approximately 0930 hours on 05/23/2023 CSI REDACTED was making general observations for the livestock humane handling verification task. CSI REDACTED walked onto the harvest floor from the cattle pens, entering the stunning area of the facility. When she looked into the knock box there were two cows within it. The knocking box is designed to hold one animal at a time. One cow had just been stunned and the head of the second animal was underneath the unconscious animal with its hindquarters pushed down by the air compressed door. The second animal was then stunned and rendered unconscious. CSI REDACTED asked the stunning employee why he was knocking with two animals in the knock box, to which he replied that he was unable to back the second animal out of the knock box. US Reject tag B-36 612046 was applied to the stunning area. The Harvest Floor Supervisor and QA Manager were notified and observed the noncompliance associated with the establishment’s failure to minimize excitement and discomfort to the animal. This is a noncompliance with 9 CFR 313.2(a).
