HATS category VIII- Stunning effectiveness At approximately 10:30 am while performing on-line inspection of swine, IPP heard the verbal cue of “fire in the hole”. The gun was fired, and the pig started to scream, indicating an ineffective stun. The gun was immediately fired again but didn’t hit the pig. The gun operator immediately fired a third shot that successfully rendered the pig unconscious. Establishment management confirmed the gun operator had an ineffective stun attempt. Upon further inspection, IPP discovered two bullet holes in the pig. The ineffective shot penetrated the pigs cheek, while the effective shot successfully penetrated the brain cavity. IPP informed establishment management this was a non-compliance with 9 CFR 313.16(a)(1).
