HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness On June 14th at approximately 0955 hours, I, the CSI, entered the slaughter floor and observed a pig that was already shackled, hoisted and had been stuck for bleeding which was paddling its front legs. I approached the animal and observed the pigs eyes tracking away from me, blinking naturally and blinking in response to me touching the eye. I observed this pig had received an insufficient electrical stun to maintain surgical anesthesia throughout the bleeding process. I informed the establishment secondary stun operator the pig was no longer insensible. The secondary stun operator readily retrieved the electrical current stunning device and applied another stun application to the head, which rendered the pig insensible with no further paddling or eye movement. I applied U.S. Reject Tag #B7005962 to the stunning area. The Plant Manager was verbally notified of the forthcoming noncompliance record. The Denver District Management Team was notified through supervisory channels. There have been no noncompliance records issued for the same root cause within the past 90 days. This establishment has not implemented a robust systematic approach to livestock humane handling.
