HATS Category VIII: Stunning Effectiveness On August 22, 2023, at approximately 0925 hours on the slaughter floor at Riverview Meat Company (Est. 21190), I CSI REDACTED observed the establishment move a swine into knock box (free standing). Initial stun attempt with a .22 magnum rifle was ineffective as it was observed to knock the animal down, but the swine stood back up. The establishment stun operator retrieved the firearm and delivered an effective corrective action stun which rendered the animal insensible, and it remained so thereafter. The Knock box was tagged with US Reject tag # B7289232 and plant management Ms. REDACTED was notified of non-compliance with 9 CFR 313.16(a)(1) and 9 CFR 313.16(a)(3).

HATS CATEGORY VIII: Stunning Effectiveness At approximately 0830 on Thursday, August 17th, while observing slaughter procedures on the kill floor at Riverview Meat Company Establishment #21190, I, CSI REDACTED, observed establishment personnel move a cow into the knock box and restrain with the head gate. Establishment personnel delivered an initial stun attempt with a handheld captive bolt (HHCB) device that was ineffective, as evidenced by the animal remained standing. Establishment personnel reloaded and delivered immediate and effective corrective actions with the HHCB device, which rendered the cow insensible, and it remained so thereafter. USDA Reject/Retain Tag Number B36327222 was applied to the knock box, and REDACTED, Establishment Management, was notified of the non-compliance and of the regulatory control action.

Hats Category VIII Stunning Effectiveness On 5/11/2023 at approximately 0850, at Riverview Meat Co. est. M21190, while performing the Livestock Humane Handling task, I, CSI REDACTED, observed the following events. The establishment moved the third swine of the day into the stunning chute and an initial stunning attempt was made with a handheld captive bolt device. The initial attempt was observed to contact the animal, but was ineffective as the animal remained standing with tracking eye movement, blood was observed coming from the head, and the animal made a grunting sound. An immediate corrective action stun was delivered, using a second loaded captive bolt gun, which effectively rendered the animal insensible, and it remained so thereafter. FSIS reject tag number B28142539 was placed on the stunning chute, and Ms. REDACTED, plant manager, was notified of the non-compliance and of the regulatory control action.
