Humane Handling Category VII - Effective Stun On the morning of July 3, 2024, at approximately 8:02 A.M., while performing a Humane Handling task I REDACTED observed the following on the slaughter floor. An employee fired the first round of a .410 with slugs. The shot did not knock the cow down. The employee fired a second shot. The cow sat then laid down, but still looked to be conscious. The employee fired a final shot which was from a .22 rifle that killed the cow. I applied U.S. Rejected tag B-46 070662 and management was notified. I spoke with management, and they do have a robust systematic plan in place along with a humane handling program. They are in noncompliance with CFR 313.16(a)(1).

On the morning of November 7, 2023, at approximately 6:30 a.m., while performing a Handling During Ante Mortem Inspection task I, CSI REDACTED observed the following: A steer was down in the pen and its head was stuck between the bottom rail of the pen and the floor. Plant personnel immediately acted and unscrewed the bottom rail to remove the animal’s head. The animal did stand up and walk around allowing CSI REDACTED to perform an ante mortem inspection. U.S. Retained tag B-46 070588 was placed on the pen and plant management assured me that it would be fixed today. The plant was in noncompliance with 9 CFR 313.1(a).
