Humane Handling Category VIII - Effective Stun On the morning of October 2, 2024, at approximately 6:55 a.m., while performing a Humane Handling task CSI REDACTED observed the following on the slaughter floor: An employee fired the first round of a .410 with slugs. The first shot missed the animal due to the animal moving around. The employee fired a second shot the animal this shot made contact, but the animal remained standing. The animal continued to move around. The employee fired a third shot which was from a .22 rifle that killed the cow, and fired a security shot immediately after. CSI REDACTED applied U.S. Rejected tag B-45 049333 to the restraint box and management was notified. CSI REDACTED and REDACTED watched the playback video and spoke with management about the size of the restraint box and that the animals should have limited movement, and how this was a concern when Dr. REDACTED came for a visit. The plant does have an active robust systematic approach in place. CSI REDACTED called Dr. REDACTED and discussed the situation with her, and she stated that we could remove the U.S. Rejected tag since they immediately acted. They are in noncompliance with CFR 313.16(a)(1) and CFR 313.16(b)(1)(iii).
