Non-Compliance Description:

HAT Category II: Truck Unloading 9 CFR 313.2(a) On 4-2-2024 at 9:13 A.M., while I was performing my livestock humane handling task, the following non-compliance was observed. While I was observing them unload a steer, the animal became stuck halfway out of the trailer. It was wedge between the door of the trailer. The owner of the animal climbed into the trailer and began kicking the animal. I verbally told him to stop kicking the animal. He stopped immediately. When they couldn’t get the animal up. The owner got into his vehicle and began driving forward, dragging the animal front feet across the ground. He drove roughly ten feet away from the unloading area before I stopped him. After he stopped the vehicle, the animal was able to get up and got all the way out of the trailer. It began running across the plant property. The south Canadian meats employees had to close the front gates to contain the animal and retrieve their 410 shot gun. They were able to successfully knock the animal with one shot at 9:22 A.M. I retained tagged out the unloading area after this. B27672570. I later called my supervisor Dr. REDACTED notifying her of this event. I also notified REDACTED HACCP coordinator/owner and REDACTED plant manager of this failure 9 CFR 313.2(a). The plant has a robust humane handling plan.
