Non-Compliance Description:

On Wednesday September 15, 2021, at approximately 0805 hours, while performing a Humane Handling Verification task at establishment number M11198, the Relief Public Health Veterinarian (RPHV) observed three beef cattle in the USDA antemortem pens. Upon further inspection of these pens, the RPHV observed sharp protruding metal edges on the pipe fencing of pen #1 which contained one beef heifer. USDA Retain Tag number B45468593 was applied to the pen. Mr. Hal Bennett, Establishment Owner and Mr. REDACTED, Establishment Supervisor, were notified of the deficiency. Immediate corrective action was taken by the establishment to remove the cow from potential harm until a more permanent fix to the pen can be made. Failure to maintain livestock pens in good repair to prevent sharp objects that could cause injury or pain the animals is a noncompliance with 9 CFR 313.1(a).
