Non-Compliance Description:

On Wednesday August 3, 2022 at approximately 0710 hours, while performing a Humane Handling Verification Task at establishment M11198. I CSI REDACTED observed eight beef cattle in the USDA antemortem pen. Upon further inspection of these pens. i observed a sharp protruding metal edge on the pipe fencing separating pen number 1 and 2, which pen 1 contained a custom hog and pen 2 contained a beef cow. USDA Retain Tag number B461000519 was applied to the pen. Mr. REDACTED establishment owner and floor personnel REDACTED were notified of the deficiency.  Immediate corrective action was taken by establishment to remove cow from potential harm until a more permanent fix to the pen can be made. Failure to maintain livestock pens in good repair to prevent sharp objects that could cause injury or pain to the animals is a noncompliance with 9CFR 313.1(a).
