On Monday 8/11/25, at approximately 09:00 hour, while performing a humane handling task, IIC observed a loose wire about 1 feet that was detached from inside pen#2, There was no animals placed inside pen#2. Which could potentially cause an animal to be injured. A U.S. rejected tag was placed on pen#2. Plant employee REDACTED was notified of establishment failure to comply with 9 CFR 313.1(a) Livestock pens, driveways and ramps shall be maintained in good repair.

On January 27, 2025, Inspection Program Personnel (IPP) observed the following noncompliance’s associated with humane handling of livestock at Fries Frozen Foods, LLC, Est, M46622: At 10:41am, the first shot with a .22 magnum rifle did not effectively render a sheep unconscious. The stunner took immediate effective actions and effectively rendered the sheep unconscious with a second stun. On postmortem inspection two distinct point of entry were identified on the head of the sheep. At 12:44 pm, the first shot with a .22 magnum rifle did not effectively render a sheep unconscious. The stunner took immediate effective actions and effectively rendered the sheep unconscious with a second stun. On postmortem inspection two distinct points of entry were identified on the head of the sheep. In both situations, there were 2 to 4 unrestrained sheep in the stun chute. At 1:48pm, a sheep was restrained between the stunner’s legs but the first shot with a handheld captive bolt did not effectively render the sheep unconscious. The stunner climbed out of the stun chute, retrieved the .22 magnum rifle and effectively rendered the sheep unconscious with a second shot. On postmortem inspection two distinct points of entry were identified on the head of the sheep. IPP then applied U.S. Reject Tag # B45954891 to the stunning chute. On January 13, 2025, Noncompliance Record (NR) #: QCZ1009010914N was issued for two separate stunning noncompliance’s involving two sheep. This represents the establishments failure to maintain compliance with 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1), 9 CFR 313.16.(a)(1) , and 313.16(b)(1)(iii) The establishment does have a Robust Systematic Approach (RSA) for humane handling of livestock, but it is not being effectively implemented.

On 1/13/2025 at approximately 1310 hours at 920 Fries Frozen Foods (Est. M46622), IIC observed the following non-compliance while performing a livestock humane handling verification task The establishment operator applied an unsuccessful stunning attempt to a sheep. The animal remained standing but did not vocalize. The operator cycled the firearm and attempted a second unsuccessful stunning attempt. The operator cycled the firearm and successfully stunned the animal with a third stunning attempt rendering the animal unconscious. Upon postmortem examination, three holes were observed in the animal’s skull. At approximately 1520 hours, IIC observed the following non-compliance Operator applied an unsuccessful stunning attempt in which the animal appeared to be stunned. However, the animal remained standing but did not vocalize. The animal’s head returned upright, and eye movement was observed. The operator successfully stunned the animal with the second attempt rendering the animal unconscious. Upon postmortem examination, two holes were observed in the animal’s skull. The establishment took immediate corrective actions to render the animal unconscious. This represents the establishments failure to maintain compliance with 9 CFR 313.16(a)(1) Establishments management was notified of this non-compliance.
