CATEGORY VIII: STUNNING EFFECTIVENESS On September 17th, at approximately 1320, the CSI observed the following humane handling noncompliance: A market swine was driven into the knock box by a plant employee who then attempted to administer a stun with a captive bolt. After the shot was administered, the animal was observed making active, high-pitched vocalizations and attempting to move away from the employee. The employee then used a secondary captive bolt that was immediately available in the knock box to successfully render the animal unconscious. The kill floor supervisor was immediately notified of the incident and plant management was verbally notified of the noncompliance with 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1), the animals “shall be stunned in such a manner that they will be rendered unconscious with a minimum of excitement and discomfort" and 9 CFR 313.15(a)(3), “the animal shall be in a state of complete unconsciousness and remain in this condition” after the administration of the stunning (initial) blow. There have been no recent similar NR's.
