The US Census Bureau estimated that the Black or African American Alone population in South Carolina was 1,321,696 in 2012, and represented 28.01% of South Carolina's 4,719,027 population in 2012. Richland County had the highest number of the Black or African American Alone population (184,482 residents), followed by Charleston County with 107,511 residents, and Greenville County with 85,838 residents. McCormick County had the smallest number of the Black or African American Alone population (4,948 residents) in 2012.
