According to the US Census Bureau estimates, in 2020, the net migration rate per 1,000 population for the United States was 1.45. Idaho had the highest net migration rate per 1,000 population (17.13), followed by Arizona (15.59), and Nevada (12.77). On the other hand, Alaska had the lowest net migration rate per 1,000 population (-9.42), followed by New York (-8.7), and Illinois (-8.08).

Net migration rate for a state refers to the difference between the number of migrants, both domestic and international, moving to the state and those leaving the state per 1,000 of the state's mid-year population. A positive rate is known as a net immigration rate, and a negative rate is known as a net emigration rate.
