At approximately 0920 hours on Tuesday August 8th, 2023, IPP observed the following humane handling noncompliance at Wainright and Son Establishment M48277. Plant personnel brought a bull into the knock box. The bull was secured in a head catch. A captive bolt was used. The employee at the knock box proceeded to knock the bull with the captive bolt. The bull was not rendered unconscious after the first stun, continued to stand, and had purposeful, tracking eye movement. No vocalization was heard. The employee took immediate corrective action by delivering a second shot to the bull’s head with the same captive bolt and rendered it unconscious on the second stun. No tag was placed due to immediate corrective actions. This noncompliance violates 9 CFR 313.15(a)(1). On postmortem examination it was confirmed that there were two points of entry in the bull’s head. Plant management was immediately notified of the non-compliance.
