Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2012, there were 1,078,936 people that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone in Tennessee and they represented 16.71% of the total population of Tennessee in 2012. Shelby County had the highest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone population (494,338), followed by Davidson County (179,263), and Hamilton County (68,299). On the other hand, Pickett County had the lowest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone (11), followed by Hancock County (24), and Scott County (27).

When it comes to the percentage of each county's population that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone, Shelby County had the highest percentage (52.62%), followed by Haywood County (49.66%), and Hardeman County (41.55%).
