Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2017, there were 1,125,390 people that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone in Tennessee and they represented 16.76% of the total population of Tennessee in 2017. Shelby County had the highest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone population (501,641), followed by Davidson County (187,934), and Hamilton County (69,557). On the other hand, Pickett County had the lowest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone (8), followed by Hancock County (32), and Scott County (40).

When it comes to the percentage of each county's population that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone, Shelby County had the highest percentage (53.59%), followed by Haywood County (50.27%), and Hardeman County (41.78%).
