According to recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in September 2004, the United States not seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index for all urban consumers (CPI-U): Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH was 209.8 and the 12-month percent change (inflation rate) was 5.4%. The following item categories had the highest not seasonally adjusted 12-month percent change in CPI-U:

  1. Household energy: 9.6%
  2. Alcoholic beverages: 9.3%
  3. Motor fuel: 6.3%
