Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2012, there were 2,080,503 people that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone in North Carolina and they represented 21.34% of the total population of North Carolina in 2012. Mecklenburg County had the highest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone population (297,822), followed by Wake County (195,529), and Guilford County (164,077). On the other hand, Graham County had the lowest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone (18), followed by Mitchell County (64), and Clay County (89).

When it comes to the percentage of each county's population that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone, Bertie County had the highest percentage (61.52%), followed by Hertford County (60.34%), and Northampton County (57.82%).
