Based on the US Census Vintage data estimates, in 2017, there were 2,196,682 people that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone in North Carolina and they represented 21.38% of the total population of North Carolina in 2017. Mecklenburg County had the highest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone population (338,662), followed by Wake County (214,757), and Guilford County (179,512). On the other hand, Graham County had the lowest number of Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone (40), followed by Mitchell County (73), and Clay County (118).

When it comes to the percentage of each county's population that identified as Non-Hispanic Black or African American alone, Bertie County had the highest percentage (61.3%), followed by Hertford County (60.08%), and Edgecombe County (57.42%).
