According to the World Bank, in 1986, the top 3 African countries with high net exports of goods and services in current US$ (i.e. total exports of goods and services in current US$ minus total imports of goods and services in current US$) are: South Africa (5.76B US$), Ivory Coast (853.05M US$), and Nigeria (746.64M US$).

Conversely, in 1986, the top 3 African countries with high net imports of goods and services in current US$ (i.e. total imports of goods and services in current US$ minus total exports of goods and services in current US$ ) are: Algeria (6.57B US$), Egypt (3.46B US$), and Morocco (1.27B US$).

The World Bank defines exports of goods and services as "the value of all goods and other market services provided to the rest of the world" , and defines imports of goods and services as "the value of all goods and other market services received from the rest of the world".
